new site

I just moved the site to a new host.  I used to use yahoo for hosting, but their prices are uncompetitive and they don’t support the mod_rewrite apache function.

During the move, I’ve also spent some time simplifying the site so it’s all wordpress.  I debated incorporating zenphoto, which I got familiar with updating 37A, but decided against it.  Integrating the two CMSs isn’t fun and my goal is to make my life EASY!

Additionally, I’ve decided to only use etsy now for online sales.    It’s important for my customers to know I’m making each item after the order, and etsy buyers are very familiar with this idea.  Plus, it’s got vacation mode :)

So, parts of my site are still missing (like collections) but will be back soon.

wordpress updated

i was going to write a new post of substance today but instead spent the time updating blogging technology.  A process I find rewarding and soothing (of course, everything went smoothly. let me know if anything broken is encountered.)

this morning I started writing about success. and bad choices. but the topic was too complicated and fixing the blog was easier.

precision

I really enjoy weekends spent in front of the computer, immersed in the extreme left-brainedness of html, css, php, a little javascript. It’s certainly not my forte, and the detail-orientation it requires feels unnatural.  but something about it is extremely soothing.

Yesterday I finally finished the ~14 hours worth of work I estimated last month for my site.  I stopped tracking my time after a certain point, since even an hour of uninterrupted work is rare (I interrupt myself, most of the time.)

Pretty pleased about the press page here…

Onto the Locally Known website, which needs it’s biannual overhaul. I’ve been drafting mockups in photoshop, each one gets better than the last.  maybe I ought to spend that sort of time ‘pre-designing’ for my own site, huh?

on time

in followup to my post a few days ago regarding Steve Pavlina’s time estimating system:

I am still in the process of doing my web updates, and since my original list of 11.5 hours has grown to about 15 hours (estimated)-  I’ll be happy to just get through them at all.

I did experiment with time estimates for sewing work, and found my ‘fudge factor’ is actually a 0.93 (meaning-  I estimate more time than the work actually takes.)

however, sewing is somewhat different than web-work, for me at least.  I’m still on a steeper learning curve while building, implementing, or updating websites.  Sewing and pattern-making have more repetitive tasks, and when working on simpler pieces, can be quite accurately estimated, I’ve found.

(I gave up on the idea of having a live integration of tumblr and wordpress.  perhaps some genius out there has put one together, but I couldn’t find published directions and resorted to exporting my tumblr rss and importing it to word-press.  So sad to see you go, tumblr!)

joomla

What is Joomla?

Meredith’s boyfriend Michael suggested I check out Joomla (umm, since my store is built in the most archaic way possible!!!).  that’s a project for next week.

last post here

ok, this is a falsely inserted post.  It was written on November 4th, 2008, and is here to direct you to the archives, if you so wish to visit.  I used to blog on tumblr, and when I moved to word-press, I only imported the last 20 posts.

So:  http://brookthere.tumblr.com

or the ARCHIVES

(btw, tumblr has a great archiving look, doesn’t it?)
